Human Hair Headdress Early 20th century Enga people Highlands Papua New Guinea The wig is made from human hair and decorated with cus-cus (a marsupial) tails and young cassowary feathers. The wig is quite old and has been passed down. The hair, touched up as needed and the decorations changed from sing-sing to sing-sing. In days passed the men wore these wigs everyday and had special headrests so they could sleep without messing them. We acquired this piece from one of the dancers at the Mt Hagen Sing Sing in 2000. The age on bilum (bark string) attachment indicates an earlier generation's craftsmanship. This is a fine old example, few of which ever make it out. It has been professionally mounted for display.
