Betel Mortar Early 20th century Island of Bam Papua New Guinea Peter Hallinan collected this great little figural piece on the Island of Bam in the late 1970's. Bam is part of the Schouten group of islands off the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was part of Hallinan's private collection and still bears his collection number. The carver who made it and to whom it belonged died in 1934. This piece has an excellent patina and was obviously lovingly used for many years. It stands 7" tall on its custom mount.
