Head Axe 19th/20th century Ifugao Luzon, Philippines This is a fine example of the typical Ifugao head axe. These were carried in the owner's belt and used in ambush and skirmishes for killing and head taking. A blow to the head from the spike side would instantly kill or immobilized the victim without doing great damage to the skull trophy. The blade side would be then used to separate the head from the body. Ifugao headhunters were active well into the 20th century. They were powerful foes who managed to keep from being subjugated by the Spanish for 400 years. It wasn't until the occupation of the Philippines by Americans that these fierce warriors were subdued.
