Wedding Blanket Panel 19th/20th Century Miao Southern China / Vietnam When a girl is married her mother passes on a blanket panel to be sewn into a new quilt. These matrilineal panels are passed down for many generations. They were intricately embroidered in silk on linen and are considered family heirlooms and treasures. This piece was made around the turn of the century and utilizes aniline dyes as well as natural ones. Aniline dyes were much used once they were introduced around the 1870s. The people were very pleased with the bright colors and fastness they made available. This piece is made up of three hand woven panels, all richly embroidered. It measures 35-3/4" x 57-1/2". When mounted and wall hung these rare pieces stand up to any modern painting or print. I am presently collecting and researching 19th century examples for a monograph. Any information or pieces you may have available are of interest. Please feel free to contact me regarding this material. Photos | Asia Index |
