Old Man Mask
19th century
Dolpo
Nepal

This shaman's mask is an exquisite example of old Nepali workmanship. It has seen much use and still shows traces of green, white and red pigments. The surface has an incredible dark patina. The human hair beard and mustache were attached with pieces of old canvas and leather. There is a native repair to a stress crack in the forehead. Old masks of this quality are no longer available in the field. This one came from a Spanish collection.
